Each tale gives the reader characters known to all, with lessons for life and mortality: The Off-Shore Pirate This is a funny and upbeat romantic comedic short story about a very selfish and spoiled young lady who is on a trip to Florida with her uncle.
When their boat is captured by pirates, she falls in love with the captain. This was first published in The Saturday Evening post on May 29,and was made into a silent movie the following year. I liked this story very much. This is by far one of my most favorite Fitzgerald short stories.
Head and Shoulders This is a story of an unlikely love match between an intellectual child prodigy, Horace Tarbox, and an exuberant, vibrant dancer, Marcia, who becomes his wife. Here we see Fitzgerald's thoughts through the characters, regarding his relationship with his wife, Zelda, who he believed kept him from improving his writing.
The Cut-Glass Bowl This story speaks to the happiness and difficulties of the married life of Evylyn and Harold Piper that surrounds a large cut-glass bowl they received as a wedding gift, and how it relates and impacts their life together. Benediction This is the story of Lois, a young girl who is on her way to have a tryst with Howard, her lover. On the way, she stops to meet her much older brother, Kieth [sic], who is in a seminary and about to become a priest. Since Marjorie thinks Bernice is a drag on her social life, and none of the boys want to dance with Bernice, she convinces Bernice to cut her hair short into a bob.
Dalyrimple Goes Wrong Bryan Dalyrimple, a selfish twenty-something-year-old man enjoyed far too many indulgences and privileges. Fitzgerald has fun with morality in a way that makes Dalyrimple's deeds genuine, yet defensible, and does such that it leaves the reader knowing he still fails and goes wrong.
The Four Fists Samuel Meredith, a self-righteous pompous young man goes through life vexing people and doing them wrong. Four well-placed-on-his-chin fists eventually set him right, particularly when he rubs his chin and feels the lump those four fists left. Another Fitzgerald on Kindle, and a lesser known one at that. This is good as it allows me to get to know his oeuvre in some detail.
